The traction stirrup is used for performing skeletal traction on the proximal limb segments, i.e. humerus and femur. Because of the muscular mass surrounding these bones, traction performed with the traction belt used for the distal limb segments could cause damage to the force transmission structures. To avoid this problem, the stirrup is fixed to the proximal limb segments by means of a transcondylar k-wire. Once the stirrup jaws are connected to the K-wire, the latter can be tensioned by means of the mechanism which widens the jaws so as to avoid that the wire cuts the soft tissues. Traction can thus be performed in an effective and safe way.
